Bringing crowds to their feet at the hardest to please and sophisticated night clubs in the Midwest, Reverend Raven and the Chain Smoking Altar Boys play traditional blues, straight up with a big dose of passion. With smoking grooves, served up with hot harmonica and smooth stinging guitar they play original songs peppered with nods to Slim Harpo, Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, Billy Boy Arnold, Junior Wells and the three Kings.
Reverend (Richard) Raven was born and raised in Chicago and began playing guitar after seeing Freddie King at The Kinetic Theater in 1971. He spent the rest of the seventies playing clubs on the south side of Chicago. After a 15-year hitch in the Navy, he moved to Milwaukee where he resumed playing in the taverns of the greater Milwaukee area. Reverend Raven & The Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys released their debut album “Slow Burn” in 1998. The band’s 2010 recording “Shake Your Boogie” received two 2011 Blues Blast Award nominations in the categories of “Best Blues Band” and “Best Song”. Reverend Raven has opened for B.B. King, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Junior Wells, Magic Slim; and is still a headliner at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.
Since 2015, the band has featured Westside Andy Linderman on harmonica. Andy is one of the premier harp players to come out of Wisconsin. Hohner Harmonicas lists him as an endorser alongside Rod Piazza, Toots Thielemans, & Corky Siegel, among many other greats.
Rooted deeply in the sound of old school Chicago blues, Reverend Raven & The Chain Smokin’ Altar Boys have spent the last two decades honing a sound that is unique, sublime and enticing. The vocals and instrumental work is never overblown or overdone. The solos are tasteful and authentic. The band knows what everyone is supposed to do and does it. No one steps on each other’s toes and everyone works to make the sound better. As their name implies these guys are smokin’ hot. This is highly recommended Chicago blues!
