The Black Lillies’ story is one of hard work and highway miles … a story that traces their evolution from a group of friends making music in songwriter and frontman Cruz Contreras’ living room into what is now one of Americana’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that blur the boundaries between folk, soul, red dirt country, and blues.

Proudly independent since their formation, The Black Lillies were one of the first independent bands to play the Grand Ole Opry and have since returned dozens of times – sharing that stage with big-budget bands and major-label mainstreamers. They’ve chased down success on their terms, ignoring the trends of Nashville and focusing on a sound that, as Vanity Fair notes, “continues to cross generations and musical genres – country, folk, blues and…a touch of the Dead, for good measure.”

The proof is now etched into vinyl with Hard To Please!, the band’s fourth studio album. It’s an alternately rip-roaring and deeply intimate record, showcasing both Contreras’ lyrical evolution as a writer and a more sonically sophisticated side of the band than we’ve heard before. Whether it was due to the pressure of the ticking clock, the injection of creative energy from recording with new faces, or simply the steadfast desire of a hardworking band to always outdo themselves, the album stands as the finest yet in The Black Lillies’ outstanding catalog.

“Strong roots-folk songwriting, sweet harmonies, and charismatic indie spirit.” – Entertainment Weekly

Special guest Whitney Rose

Whitney Rose may be a native Canadian, but the sound the young singer-songwriter has crafted for herself is entirely Texan twang. On January 27th, Rose released South Texas Suite, the follow-up to 2015’s Heartbreaker of the Year, produced by Raul Malo of the Mavericks. Rose’s next album, due out this year, is also produced by Raul Malo.

On South Texas Suite, however, Rose goes it alone, producing the entire EP by herself. Songs like lead single “My Boots” and the south-of-the-border tribute “Three Minute Love Affair,” a paean to the Lone Star State’s dance halls, bristle with local flavor. Now residing in Austin, Rose cut the record at Dale Watson‘s studio in town.

Rose is currently playing throughout the U.S. and Canada after returning from a two month tour of Europe.
